How I got out of my Social Media rut! – January 15th, 2022

Nearing the end of 2021, I was super stuck with my social media growth. It felt like my number of followers was continuing to drop daily, and I felt so lost as to what I was doing wrong. At this point I decided to try out some different strategies that I saw were working for other creators who work in the same niche as me.

When you need a little boost in growth on your social platforms, the most successful thing I have tried thus far is going to Tiktok. When I was in my rut, I went to Tiktok and started creating 10-12 videos a day on there, and naturally one of them will do well – and it did. One of my videos ended up getting 1 Million views, and that translated to around about 500-600 Instagram followers!

The moral of this post is that when you are in a rut there is nothing that you could do that will hinder you at that point. Anything you do is better than sitting there and doing nothing. Take those thoughts and feelings, and post them on Tiktok!

My Coolest Collaboration thus far! – January 25th, 2022

In this blog post, I want to talk about the coolest collaboration I have taken part in as a content creator thus far. Let me just set the scene of when I got this email: I was driving to school and I hear that email notification on my phone. Typically I wouldn’t pull over to check my emails, but I was already super early to school because there was no traffic that day. I pull over and see I got an email from Ford Canada, which was so weird that I thought it was a scam. I begin to read the email and Ford wanted to give me a car for the week + money to go on a snowy adventure! Safe to say I was so excited.

I picked up the car the day before my birthday, so I got to have the Ford for my 21st birthday! Compared to the car I currently drive, this Ford was stunning and like nothing I had ever driven before. It even had a reverse camera, so I could finally reverse into parking spots! In exchange for the car for the week, I had to post 1 in feed Instagram post featuring the car. Along with that, I posted quite a few Tiktoks about it because those Tiktoks were getting so many views, and people loved that I had a collaboration with Ford.

I got a Collaboration with my Dream Brand – February 5th, 2022

Since the beginning of my social media journey, there have been certain brands that I was dying to work with. The one brand I feel like every content creator wants to work with is Revolve, and I was no exception. Revolve was my dream brand to work with, and it felt like once you worked with Revolve – you made it.

I had been emailing Revolve and pitching myself to them every single month for the past year. One day I was driving home on the highway, and I hear that email notification. Typically, Ill just look down at the title and see who the email is from, and then ill read it when I reach my destination. I looked down to see who it was from and I see “Revolve x @hannahh.johnstone” and I swear I almost had a heart attack. I quite literally screamed, and got off the highway to read the email.

Ever since then, I have been working with Revolve making Tiktok videos in exchange for their clothing which is beautiful. Some of my favourite pieces of clothing I own are from Revolve, and I am so excited that my biggest collaboration dream came true this year!

How I Balance School and my Social Media Career – February 15th, 2022

Balancing school work with any type work including social media is very difficult. When I started my social media career I started slacking on my school work because I was all consumed in my work which ended up not helping my grades. After that term, I decided that I needed a plan in order to balance both activities equally.

The first thing I do to stay organized is to make daily lists of the tasks I need to get done that day. I rank them from most important to least important in order to get the most important things done for sure. The second thing I do is schedule in time for breaks and relaxing, so I don’t burn myself out. The last thing I do is take the weekends off social media work in order to catch up on school work and see my friends and family.

I got a Nose Job!! – February 28th, 2022

A few years ago in first year university I developed a really bad sinus infection and was left with my septum being severely deviated. For two whole years after that I was in and out of seeing different doctors just trying to figure out what was wrong and why I couldn’t breathe. Finally, I got a referral to an ENT who was able to tell me what was wrong and refer me to a surgeon.

Once I saw the surgeon, we figured out a game plan for my nose and set a date for the surgery. The overall recovery of it was pretty painful, but relatively quick. My black eyes were completely gone after a little under two weeks, but the tip of my nose is still numb to this day. I still have a few follow up appointments, but for now we just wait while it heels and the stitches dissolve. If you want to see the full process, I have a video up on my youtube channel!

Taking time off from my Social Media. – March 10th, 2022

Everyone has days where they feel like they are trying super hard to grow their personal brand but it is going nowhere. We have all been there. Im here to tell you that it is okay to take a break to get re-inspired and just relax. Working social media as a job is way more hours than working a 9-5, and it can be exhausting when you are not seeing the results you want to see. Taking a break may see daunting at first because you are almost guaranteed not to grow, but you will be able to come back strong and more motivated after.

Lets talk about my recent break. After my nose surgery, I took almost an entire month off of posting consistently on all my platforms because I was severely burnt out, and still am. I took the time off because I knew that I was not putting my best work forward, and that it showed through the content I was putting out. During my break, I took time to heal from my surgery and treat myself. I spent a lot of time doing these that I love doing, and it made me want to document my life again. So, if you feel like you need a break – take it.

Getting back into Social Media after my break – March 20th, 2022

This was the hardest part of the break by far. Getting back into something after taking a month off is super hard because you have gotten used to that break. Especially when you are taking a break from social media it can be hard because you need to get back into a consistent rhythm in order for the algorithm to like favour you again. A constant worry I had is that my audience had forgotten about me and that I would be irrelevant in the space.

How I got back into it: I made a post explaining that I had taken a break and that I would be back on a regular posting schedule just to clear the air with my audience. After that, I went back to my regular posting days and times. It seems very strict to some people to post at a specific time, but personally it helps my content! My insights were terrible when I came back from my break and still somewhat are, but you have to push through that in order to continue your success.
